Boomkat

Another ultra-covert dancefloor deployment from London's SM_LL imprint, UAN0025 is a triptych of bare-boned machine funk that's as indebted to Autechre as it is Mika Vainio.

How do you sound modern and throwback at the same time? UAN0025 answers that question by putting a tweaky, modular era spin on sounds that alternate between early-period AE worship and Pan Sonic fetishism, disrupting noisy analog vamps with dissociated stutters and ruff acidic squelches. '525 TM' is almost mutant dancehall, with a steppers rhythm made from synthesized gutter burps and dissolved 303 gurgles. The only element that's left relatively untouched is a single, isolated hi-hat that provides an anchor as the rest of the sounds are tangled with feedback and saturation.

'530 TM' is substantially more abstract, losing the rhythmic momentum of its predecessor but gaining the toothy bite of industrial music. It's led by a chirping rhythm that shifts cautiously (and almost imperceptibly) as the track develops, while the minute central beat splutters haphazardly. Final track meanwhile '526 TM' is almost electro, or how electro might sound if it was piped through a plughole into an empty bathroom. The all-important TR-808 rhythm is replicated by the anonymous musician's synth, but it's the waterlogged oscillations we can't turn away from, that swirl around the kicks like ribbons laced with knives.

Finn of Tomland

“Now we're talking, über wicked rhythm syncopations, high pitch bleeps, a bit of Dub and a shitload of just because this is great attitude.
So what's not to like..?
Just do you shopping mate!”
