whose body is this - Complete Gesture

“A new release dedicated to Algorithmic experimentation and new forms of composition and synthesis.

Ben has left us some words where he explains a bit about the process of composing this album:

"The idea of “playing” the PdPG is so important to this album. Each track is either generated via a graphical score (interpreted by a “DIY” neural net, trained with randomised, stochastic data), or a jam from a state left after a score was played. In the former situation, I’m an interrupter, changing the trajectory of the score by adding in modulations and changing settings on the fly, listening for rhythmic structures/phrases, attempting to enhance them or stop them; here the machine is the player and I’m the modulator. In the latter case, I become the player, taking over from where the machine left off, using my relationship and familiarity with the instrument to take the “result” of the score to a complete composition, working from the suggestion of the machine. The experience was exciting: after the data was randomised, I didn’t know what sounds the PdPG would make and this collision of every parameter jumping non-linearly gave rise to a massive wealth of textures".

According to the author's words we see how the roles within music are changing, the boundaries that separate the interaction of the machine and the human are disappearing in pursuit of a fusion that makes the progress more interesting, this does not mean that we leave all the work to the machine but that we use it as any instrument.

I hope you enjoy these interactions and the wonderful, complex and advanced composition of this album.” – EVEL
