Who needs a label now anyway?

When we started back in 2012, we had a tagline that read “beginning as a label”. 

Our initial plan was always to not credit artists, but to challenge artist-label relationships and find alternative ways of working, aside from the ego driven intent we are often surrounded by today. Choosing to present ourselves via a series of ambiguously numbered but functionally designed outputs, helped us develop and practise a pattern of behaviour inspired through interconnection. 

It was always clear from the start there was a need to poke, to push, to challenge, to find the edge and dare push beyond it, and that eventually, perhaps when things were clearer or we were brave enough, there would be a need to do more.

What is SM-LL?

SM-LL is a label and distributor curator, a collating of resources, and a mutual enabler of collective output and engagement. 

There is no magic platform here. There are no convoluted payment systems presented as favourable only when set against the exploitation of even worse platforms.

As we tire of platforms channeling corporate greed in the guise of support and community, we are boosting our collective efforts to better enable and connect the various creative minds we encounter, through explicit interconnection and distribution of those activities often found in our periphery.

There is no lock in. No social media presence or criteria required. We are just a node in a network with a desire to help other nodes form and connect.
